Born in Columbus, Ohio, Demetrious Nelson was raised with his two older brothers Dee and Deontae by a single-parent mother Tajjah Nelson. After moving to Westerville, the suburbs of Columbus, at the age of five, Demetrious, better known as Meechie, explored many different avenues. While spending most of his adolescence with his two older brothers, which whom he was highly influenced by, Meechie took not only their advice but picked up the sport of lacrosse because of his oldest brother Dee. Yes, American’s of African descent can play the sport of lacrosse. (Attackman of the year his junior season in high school, All-American senior year and was a four-time first-team-all-state award winner). As a joke, while in high school, a couple of Meechie’s best friends Kellen Bell, Tyler Chubbs and brother Deontae began free styling in the basement of his mother’s house. After the session ended, Deontae, Meechie’s brother approached him with a more than joking demeanor. “You have talent. Take this rap thing serious,” Meechie recalls Deontae saying to him. Although it was never his intention, Meechie began pondering the idea of a rap career. It would take a tragedy, however, for Meechie to realize his destiny and fulfill his brother’s legacy. On the date of August, 11 2006, Meechie’s brother and best friend died in a catastrophic motorcycle accident. Distraught, Meechie found it hard to cope, but Deontae’s words were left echoing in his head. “Take this Rap thing serious.” That is exactly what Meechie did. ‘By My Side’, a tribute song to Deontae was written days after his horrific death, and it was this song that propelled the rap career of Meechie Nelson. “If it wasn’t for the death of my brother (Deontae), I wouldn’t be where I’m at today,” Meechie explains. “To be honest, I would have never gone to the studio to pursue the rap game like I am. I owe it all to my brother.” Rapping is not the only thing Meechie is good for. Today, Meechie, along with best friend Kellen Bell (meech and Kellz), is on a rampage. The two collaborate to create and produce their own music. Meechie adds with a smile: “Whenever you hear the drink being poured in our beats, that’s liquor being poured out for my brother to show respect, or you should know we’re about to get it in.” Not bad for an All-American lacrosse player. YUUUUUUUUUUUUP!
